After installing the new keypad, the 2110V board can be easily mounted on the back of the keypad itself! Luckily, Bell coinless keypads will fit perfectly in GTE-style payphones!Īs I mentioned in a previous post, swapping out a keypad assembly is incredibly easy with just a few screws holding things in place. Unfortunately, Protel boards rely on a keypad with a DB-25 connector while the 2110V uses a 7-pin straight connector common on Bell-style coinless phones (Do you know if there is any sort of pin compatibility between Protel and Bell coinless keypads? Let me know!). While the 2110V is physically small, it packs s great set of features including both four-terminal and modular connections for common handsets, compatibility with most two-wire hookswitches, adjustable volume switches, ringer support, and both RJ-11 and dial-terminal telephone line connections!Ī fresh 2110V board right out of the packaging.įor many, the 2110V may be a drop-in replacement for an existing payphone board, but in our case we also needed to swap out the keypad. The coinless board we are using is known only as the 2110V, and as far as I can tell it is manufactured by a Chinese company specializing in armored and industrial phones. While this isn’t the most fun or authentic solution to get our payphone operational, it importantly will work to allow users to place calls, and it installs quickly with no destruction to any existing payphone components. Essentially, with this board installed, a payphone can behave like a normal house phone (or more colloquially: a freephone). The coinless board is exactly what it sounds like: a board to use within payphones or armored phones that doesn’t have any logic or connections for coin components. After running into some issues getting our Protel board programmed for use, we’ve decided to instead use a “coinless” board.
